Revolutionising Website Building with Framer Plugins

Hey there! I’m Wes, co-founder of the Framer Blocs plugin, and I’m excited to share my journey with you as part of the Framer Plugins blog series.

What Does the Blocs Plugin Do?

Blocs is a drag-and-drop website builder designed for creative folks like you! We built it for those who love experimenting with bold design ideas but hate the time it takes to make them responsive. Whether you’re a designer, developer, marketer, freelancer, agency, or just starting out, Blocs is perfect for you.

A Little About Me

I’ve always had a diverse range of interests, all tied together by a love for creating. After about 4 to 5 years of building websites, I learned web design and development through pure grit. It wasn’t something that came naturally to me, but I stayed focused on the vision of what each website could be. That’s why I helped create Blocs—to take care of all the tedious tasks, so building a website never feels like “pure grit” and you can stay in the creative zone longer.

The Inspiration Behind Blocs

Before Blocs was a plugin, it started as a project on Framer with a bunch of pre-built sections and styles. We kept asking ourselves, “How can we make these color styles 10x easier to use with a plugin?” After asking that question countless times, the idea for Blocs took shape.

Why I Decided to Build the Plugin

After we experienced some success with Blocs, Koen, Framer’s CEO, reached out to me on Twitter and suggested turning it into a plugin. I thought it was a fantastic idea, so I showed my co-founder Aidan, and we replied with a resounding “yes, please!” We got started immediately.

Overcoming Challenges

Building the plugin had its challenges. Time zone differences made it tough for Aidan and me to hop on calls, especially with him in the UK and me in Australia. When we brought Isaac on board—an absolute unit of a programmer—it spread us thin in terms of communication since he’s based in the U.S. We had to rely heavily on text communication, which taught me a lot about remote teamwork and the importance of clear communication. As designers and non-technical founders, it’s easy to overscope our ideas, and waiting a whole day to hear that something won’t work can be frustrating, so effective communication was key.

I’m excited to be part of the Framer community and can’t wait to share more about what we’re building.
